Baby Blues Syndrome Can Also Attack Dad

Have you ever heard of baby blues syndrome? This syndrome is usually experienced by women who have just given birth. Women who experience it can show a change in attitude to be moody and sad after giving birth. In fact, there is a reluctance to take care of the baby.

However, did you know that baby blues syndrome can not only affect mothers? A study shows that the symptoms of baby blues in fathers have occurred in about 21 percent of men.

In the father figure, the symptoms that usually occur are more emotional, crying for no apparent reason, sensitivity, and feeling sad or anxious. These symptoms usually appear in the first year after the birth of the little one.

So, what are the causes of baby blues syndrome? Then, is there a way to prevent this baby blues syndrome from happening to future fathers?

There are many causes of baby blues syndrome in fathers. Here are some of the most common causes:

Afraid of New Responsibilities and Not Ready to Be a Father

Being a father is not easy. Fathers must be able to take care of babies, educate children, and set a good example for their children in the future. For some fathers-to-be, this responsibility is a big and difficult thing to carry out.

These thoughts sometimes trigger the baby blues in fathers, especially for those who marry at a young age or still want a free life like when they were single.

Lack of Sleep and Rest

Lack of sleep is something new dads will experience. This naturally happens because the husband must accompany his wife during the delivery process until after the baby is born. Then, the husband must also take turns taking care of the baby so that the wife can rest.

Because of this condition, many new dads experience sleep deprivation. If there is a long period of time, lack of sleep will cause mental and behavioral changes, especially in fathers who rarely stay up late.

These mental and behavioral changes are ultimately the cause of the baby blues syndrome.

Financial Problems

Having children certainly requires a big financial responsibility. Starting from the cost of the birth process to the cost of caring for the baby later.

This is one of the triggering factors for stress conditions and baby blues in fathers, especially for those who do not have mature financial planning. Therefore, financial planning must be considered since the baby is still in the womb.

Very Short Leave

Leave times to vary from one company to another. There are several companies that give dads plenty of time to rest and help care for the baby.

However, some other companies provide a very short time, so fathers have to go to work before the recovery process is complete. It can also trigger symptoms of baby blues syndrome in fathers.

Lack of attention

Lack of attention from the wife can be the cause of baby blues syndrome. After giving birth, the wife’s attention will usually be fully devoted to the baby. This change sometimes requires an adaptation process from the father. If the father fails to adapt, then baby blues syndrome can occur.
